SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Dæmon

He has been with me since the day I was born. Sometimes as a mouse, others as a cat, once or twice as a squirel or dragonfly. But always with me. When I became a woman he settled on this form. He is my best friend companion and the one I talk to when I need to reason something out. He also warns me from getting into trouble! I once asked his name and he told me I would have to learn it on my own. I still haven't. If our bond is ever severed we will die. It is as simple as that. We live in a world where symbols and traditions are important, but technology is used as well. He sits with me in my office and is helping me write this now from his favorite perch my knowlege box.

In the world of Phillip Pullman's Golden Compass and the rest of the trio of stories the characters from the one alternate reality have what are known as dæmons that live with them. The best way to describe them is the persons concience or inner voice and a part of them. When your dæmon dies you die. You are born with it and until you hit puberty your dæmon changes shape until it finds the one that fits the two of you. What your dæmon becomes also tells what you will become. He isn't fanart because it isn't based on any particular characters instead it is my wondering of what my own personal dæmon would be if I lived in that world.  Thanks to Mr. Pullman's inspiration.

He in reality has no name. (I haven't thought of one yet) He is a puppet made of a polymer clay blend and rabbit fur. He is life size to a spider monkey right down to weight. When I travel he does travel with me and sits either on my shoulder or in my arms. When people first see him they think he is actually real.

He sort of reminds me of those little Kewpie dolls. How cute!
